Are your carabiners strong enough?

Consider this: A paragliding carabiner of a DHV test pilot breaks into two pieces during takeoff! One aluminum harness carabiner broke while starting a paraglider in the Czech Republic! This carabiner was used over a period of two years during paragliding flight.

It is a known fact that aluminum carabiners have a limited life time. USHGA now requires carabiners on tandem paragliders be steel. But is steel strong enough?
